The Vidanta Foundation Opens Annual Awards for the 11th Year

Mexico City, January 22, 2020 - The Vidanta Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes the economic and social development as well as the protection of the environment in Latin America and the Caribbean, in collaboration with the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), calls for entries in the 11th annual Vidanta Foundation Awards. This year’s award will be presented to those that demonstrate contributions for the protection of the environment in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Vidanta Foundation Award seeks to recognize innovative and sustainable initiatives that generate a positive impact on the environment, either by collaborating to improve the natural resources management, demonstrating new ways to manage climate change, raising awareness about the environmental issues and emergent environmental challenges or proposing robust solutions to the wide range of environmental challenges and threats that the countries of the region are facing. Projects with clear evidence that show promising results and have the potential to be adopted in a much broader scale in other places or countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are expected.

The deadline for receiving applications will be July 31, 2020, and all individuals and/or organizations from the public or private sector that carry out their work in Latin America or the Caribbean can participate.

The Vidanta Foundation Award was created in 2009 with the goal of recognizing and supporting outstanding original projects carried out in Latin America and the Caribbean to reduce poverty and inequality, as well as combat discrimination. In its ten sucessful previous editions, hundreds of projects were evalutated and over $2.5 million was invested to support 35 different initiaves from different countries of the region.

Mexican organizations that have been awarded with the Vidanta Foundation Prize in previous years include: Asociación Civil Mexicana Centro de Acopio en la Tarahumara (Mexican Civil Association of the Tarahumara Gathering Center); Cinco Panes y Dos Peces A.C. (Five Bread and Two Fish); Dignidad y Justicia en el Camino A.C (Dignity and Justice on the Path); IDEAS Información y Diseños Educativos para Acciones Saludables (Information and Educational Designs for Healthy Actions); el Instituto de Liderazgo Simone de Beauvoir (The Simone de Beauvior Leadership Institute); el Instituto para las Mujeres en Migración A.C. (Institute for Women in Migration of Mexico); IXIM A.C.; Joven es Yucatán (Young is Yucatan); and Unidos por la Montaña A.C. (United for the Mountain).

Previous participants on the judging panel included former presidents César Giviria (Colombia), Ricardo Lagos (Chile), Julio María Sanguinetti (Uruguay) y Ernesto Zedillo (Mexico) as well as a countless of renowed profesionals with an impeccable political, diplomatic or academic career in topics related to the fight against poverty and inequality, such as Carmelo Angulo (Spain), Cynthia Arnson (United States), Rebeca Grynspan (Costa Rica), Nora Lustig (Argentina), José Luis Machinea (Argentina), Luis Maira (Chile), Billie Miller (Barbados), Guadalupe González, Rolando Cordera Campos y Esteban Moctezuma (the latter three from Mexico).

The applications for the Vidanta 2020 Foundation Award will be evaluated according to the importance of the work carried out in the field of environmental protection taking into account the criteria published. Among those that stand out are: innovation in the conceptial aspect or in the implementation area, measurable results and impact, the capacity for continuity over time and that of being applied in other places, as well as environmental sustainability. The prize amounts will be provided in full by the Vidanta Foundation, and they are presented as follows:

  • First Prize: $75,000 USD
  • Second Prize: $50,000 USD
  • Third Prize: $40,000 USD
  • Fourth Prize $35,000 USD
  • Fifth : $25,000 USD
